Dr.V.Shanta

The death of the 93 year old Dr.V.Shanta, Chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institue, Chennai is a great loss to humanity..She had dedicated her life to cancer patients for over 65 years. The Cancer Institute was founded in 1954 by Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy,the first woman medical graduate in the country.The Adyar Cancer Institute was the first specialised centre for cancer treatment in south India,. In 1955 ,the centre opened in a Thatched roof and one of the doctors who joined there was Dr.V.Shanta. She stayed in the institute from then on till her death as she wanted to be close to her patients spurning all material comforts.

Dr V Shanta   hailed from an illustrious family. Her grandfather was the physics Nobel laureate DR. Sir C.V Raman and her maternal uncle was

Dr S Chandrasekhar  who was also a Nobel laureate.

 Over her long career, she has been felicitated with numerous awards including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Ramon Magsaysay Award. Her death is mourned not only by the thousands whom she treated   but also by all people including National leaders cutting across party lines.

With the Olympics round the corner our Tennis stars are fighting one another. Mahesh and Bopanna refuse to play with Paes as parters in the doubles. Paes does not want a younger player as his doubles partner. Mahesh's father and Paes' father take up cudgels on behalf of their respective sons. First the sports minister wanted to intervene in this on going battle. Ultimately backed out. Latest to join the bandwagon is Sania Mirza who accuses the All India Tennis Association of using her as a bait. She accuses Paes' father who she says wanted a written undertaking that she would partner his son in the mixed doubles. With this bloated egos it would not be surprising if these so called Tennis stars crash out in the first game itself. Why does the AITA trying to pacify these players. Why not groom young blood. At least we can lose with a brave face. All these fading stars are surely going to fade away after the olympics.

Mumbai Blasts

Three blasts went off one at Zaveri Bazaar, one at Kabuthar Kahana near Dadar and one at Opera House on 13th July 2011 at Mumbai. Nearly 20 people died and more than 100 injured. Usual noises were made. The media went frenzy. The PM, Sonia Gandhi, LK Advani visited the injured. The ruling and opposition blamed each other. The people of Mumbai went back to their work as usual. Every one started appreciating the resiliance of Mumbaikars. the police say it is the handy work of Indian Mujaideen. The Govt. is non committal. The blast victims suffer in silence. Every thing is forgotten. A committee will be formed to look into the incident headed by a retired judge. The judge and his staff would be paid a fat salary. After months the Judge would submit a voluminous report running to hundreds of pages to the Govt. which would keep it in the library. There will be talk shows. Balaji Darshan

On 26th of May 2012 we family members numbering 12 went to Tirumala. The journey from Chennai to Tirupathi was good and we reached there within 4 hours by a private Tempo Traveller. From Tirupathi to Tirumala we went by Govt. bus. The entire journey was splendid. We thought we would finish Darshan of Balaji within 3 to 4 hours and return to Chennai by evening of 26th. But the Lord had other ideas. We stood in the queue for Rs.300 at 11.10 a.m. Slowly we meandered our way. We went from one shelter to another. No one knew where the queue ended. The shelters had been built in such a way that it takes you around the temple. While standing in the queue we helped ourselves with fruits, biscuits etc. Nobody had lunch except the morning breakfast. As time passed our hunger increased. We went on and on and on.
