Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam

Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam our ex-President passed away on 27th July 2015 while he was addressing the students of IIM Shillong. The entire nation was stunned beyond words on the passing away of such a great man in such a sudden manner. His body was kept in state in Delhi where Leaders of various hue paid their homage. Thereafter his body was flown to Rameswaram for the last rites as per the wishes of his family members. He was buried on 30th July in Rameswaram. The funeral was attended among others by the PM Shri Narendra Modi, Shri Rahul Gandhi, various Chief Ministers, Leaders of various political parties and other dignitaaries. The day 30th July 2015 was declared a public holiday by the State Govt. All the schools, colleges, State Govt. offices, private establishments were closed. Special buses were arranged from various parts of the State to Rameswaram for the people to pay their last respects to their departed leader. Interestingly all the shops put down their shutters as a mark of respect to this great man. Autos never plied. There was a near total bandh which was entirely voluntary. People have expressed themselves silently how they respect simplicity, straightforwardness, knowledge and patriotism.

What struck every one was the discipline with which the mourners nearly a lakh of  people who thronged Rameswaram to pay their last respects to this great man conducted themselves. It was gratifying to see innumerable children resolving that the vision of Shri Abdul Kalam of making India a super power in 2020 would be fulfilled by them. People kept the photo of the Late President in street corners garlanding them. Some of the autos which plied had his photo displayed on them.

Shri A.P.J.Abdul Kalam was born on 15th October 1931 in poverty. In the younger days he worked as a paper boy in Rameswaram studying in an ordinary school.. From Rameswaram to Rashtrapathi Bhavan his path was rugged. At Rashtrapathi Bhavan he was a personification of simplicity. He threw open the Moghul gardens for children to visit. Used only one room in the sprawling Rashtrapathi Bhavan. He loved teaching, children and no doubt his end came while he was lecturing to students.

Dr.Abdul Kalam's funeral procession was one of the largest Tamil Nadu has ever witnessed in recent times. Only in Chennai funeral processions of this magnitude were held for Anna, Kamaraj but outside Chennai this is the only one.

May the great soul rest in peace.
