J.Jayalalithaa

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ms. J.Jayalalithaa has been incarcerated. A CBI court on 27th of Sep.2014 convicted her on corruption charges on her disproportionate assets case which was initially filed by Dr. Subramanian Swamy way back in 1996 and later taken up by K. Anbhazagan of the DMK. The case was handled by CBI for these 18 long years judicially meandering and which now has culminated to its rightful conclusion that of convicting Ms.Jayalalithaa. She has been pronounced guilty as she could not give proper explanation for amassing Rs.66 crores while getting a salary of Rs.1 per month during the period of Chief Ministership from 1991 to 1996. She has been awarded  a sentence of 4 years imprisonment and a penalty of Rs.100 crores by Justice Micheal Cunha at the CBI Special Court at Bangaluru thus depriving her of her Chief Ministership and also debarring her from standing for elections for the TN Assembly which is due in May 2016.

She and the AIADMK camp were very confident that she would be discharged from that case.  But that was not to be. She not only lost her Chief Ministership but also been imprisoned in Bangaluru. She could also not get the bail immeditely as the High Court of Karnataka was on Dussera vacation till the 6th of October 2014. The efforts of the lawyers defending her to get her out immediately went in vain. The AIADMK cadres were stunned. They went on a rampage in all parts of Tamil Nadu protesting her arrest and accusing the Karnataka Govt. of conspiracy. Some tonsured their heads. The women wailed. Shri O. Panneerselvam was installed as the Chief Minister consequent on Ms. Jayalalithaa's displacement. He and his council of ministers took oath all the while weeping. Her lawyers efforts to make her bail plea hear by the vacation judge also could not materialise.

At last her bail application came for arguments today ie 7th Oct.2014 before the regular judge Justice Chandrasekara. Citing Supreme Court's directions her bail plea was rejected by him.  Her case has been posted for the 26th of Oct.2014 for hearing which means She has to spend her Diwali which falls on 22nd Oct. in Jail. What a pity. This case has amply proved that howsoever high a person may be the law is above him/her.
