CAPITOL CARNAGE OF DEMOCRACY
Right from Nov.3,2020 when the results of the
Presidential election started trickling and when President Trump knew that he
was on back foot, he started creating problems.
He refused to accept defeat and vowed that there would not be smooth
transition of power. All the swing states voted against Trump. Though he had
about 75 million popular votes he could not make it. On the other hand Joe
Biden had more than 81 million popular votes and also 306 electoral college
votes in his favour. Mr. Trump could not digest his defeat. He called the
election a fraud. He questioned the postal ballot system. He later
questioned the integrity of the
electoral process itself. He refused to accept the people’s verdict. He
challenged the election in state after state. He had in fact filed 60 law suits
challenging the verdicts in different states.
All the law suits were dismissed. When the Congress convened to formally
declare Joe Biden as President on the 7th Jan 2021 at Capitol Hill,
he urged his supporters to descend on Capitol Hill to negate the verdict. His
supporters marched to the Capitol Hill and what followed was complete violence
with Trump’s supporters storming the building and the law makers running for
shelter. The police were caught unawares. Trump kept on egging his supporters
and inciting them for violence. The House was stormed. Furniture were broken. Documents
were strewn. There was anarchy all round.
The President Trump even called Mr. Pence his
Vice President to negate the verdict. Thankfully Mr. Pence refused.
After hours of violence Trump’s supporters were
driven away and in the process four people lost their lives.
This was a black day in America’s History.
America had witnessed one of the worst Presidents it ever had. These kind of incidents are not rare in
banana republics in Africa but not in a very matured democracy like USA. Its pride has been shamed by Mr. Trump. Even
at this dark hour Mr. Biden showed maturity and was sombre in his address. After the mayhem, Mr. Trump was forced to
give a video message appealing to his supporters to go back and concede All
this only after all the damage had been done to democracy and after all the
World leaders had issued condemnations.
It will be an herculean task for Mr. Joe Biden
to repair the damage done by Mr. Trump all these four years of tenure. Mr.
Trump has in fact divided the country and had whipped up Whites against the
coloured. Mr. Trump had in fact earlier vowed that he would be a Republican
Candidate for Presidency in 2024. Hope his party does not endorse his candidature
after witnessing his tantrums.
